Document the damage. Define the repair.
After a storm, record visible damage safely from the ground and arrange an assessment. Repair scope, product matching and any insurance process are separate questions to work through with the responsible parties.
HAUSE visual concept / Illustrative finishes, not a project or product certification.Begin with safe observations
Keep clear of loose materials, damaged equipment and unsafe areas. Photograph the wider elevation as well as visible close details that can be captured safely. Note the date and the side of the house. Avoid climbing or disturbing damaged components to improve a photograph.
Separate visible and concealed concerns
A damaged panel does not show the full condition behind it. Tell the assessor about any water entry or new interior signs. Ask what can be established initially and what requires careful access to the underlying wall.
Discuss the repair boundary
Compare a local panel repair, an elevation replacement and a broader exterior project as distinct options. Matching, product availability and the existing condition may influence the practical choice. Have the proposal explain the reason for the recommended boundary.
Treat matching as a sample exercise
Colour and texture can change with age and exposure. Ask how replacement material will be assessed against the retained wall. A similar colour name alone does not settle the appearance. View a proposed sample in the actual location where possible.
Keep insurer and contractor records
If an insurance process applies, follow the insurer’s documentation and authorization requirements. Keep estimates, photographs and communications together. Do not assume that a contractor’s preferred scope determines coverage or that a website can establish the policy outcome.
Confirm local project requirements
The City of Calgary publishes storm-repair and permit information. Requirements can depend on the type of replacement and changes involved. Check the actual project with the relevant municipality before relying on a general rule from another location.
A project conversation
Only one side appears visibly damaged, but the original panel is discontinued. Ask for the matching assessment and options in writing. Keep the insurance decision and the proposed construction scope as separate records.
Bring these questions
- What has been assessed behind the panel?
- How will the retained colour be matched?
- Which approvals are needed for this scope?
